What you need to know about Hot Insulation

Hot insulation is designed to insulate piping systems that transport gas and other substances in high temperatures. This insulation will keep pipes from overheating, without letting necessary heat escape from the pipe.

When it comes to deciding on the material to use, one of the more important points to consider is the temperature that the insulation will cover. If the temperature is less than 177ᵒC, pre-moulded fiberglass should be sufficient. However, if the temperature of the substance is over 538ᵒC, you would have to look at either silica or ceramic insulation materials. It is important to keep in mind that hot insulation materials does not need water vapor barrier, which is found in cold insulation materials.

This type of thermal insulation can be used in Steam Pipes, Vessels, Boilers, Product Lines, Ducting, Autoclave, Heat Exchangers, Traced lines and Kilns.

Materials used in Hot Insulation:

Cray Flex: a very strong yet flexible, compressible light weight duct. You will often see this material used for Air Conditioning and Ventilation Systems in commercial, industrial and even residential applications. It is highly resistant to heat and chemicals, despite its composition of high quality raw materials.

Resin Bonded Rockwool: this material is made out of molten rocks, spun fibres and it is bonded with thermosetting binder which forms rigid Rock wool slabs. Its stability also gives it adequate thermal and acoustical insulation properties and may be used in both hot and cold insulations.

Spiral-wrap Fiberglass: Fiberglass is a popular choice, as despite being difficult-to-install, it is budget-friendly for most hot insulations. Similar to Cray Flex, Spiral-wrap Fiberglass keeps pipe content at the necessary temperature. It is covered with reflective wrap and comes in a roll-like, non-stick tape.

Why insulate?
Insulating industrial pipes may increase fire protection (when using fiberglass, a non-combustible material), it controls and even stabilises process temperatures, it controls surface temperature (which aids in personnel protection) and finally there is an opportunity to cut down on electricity bills for your company.
